Management
I am working with a small team of web-developers for several years now. Since I have taken the lead of the development department in our company, we have setup our own development environment, very similar to how the open-source community works.
We use the same tools, follow the same procedures (preparation, planning/assignments, development, follow-up, etc…), and try to adapt them to a small group of closed-source developers. Extra custom build web-tools and integrations allow me to track progress and manage my team.
Everyone in my team is (has to be) open-source minded and some of them are also involved in an open-source community. We would like to open-source some of our work, but that’s not up to me to decide.
Development
I have an extensive knowledge of these programming languages:
PHP
MySQL, PostgreSQL, PL/SQL
JavaScript, JSON, jQuery
SH, Bash, CSH
Perl
ANSI C
Other languages with basic knowledge include .NET, Python, C++ and Java.
SysOP
I have been managing the entire infrastructure for my company (Managed Services & Development) since I started there until development took of. We manage a lot of servers for our customers, most of them are mail-servers and web-servers.
They are all build on FreeBSD (expect a few Windows boxes) and they run with uptimes of several years. I think the record stands on almost 3 years now without a problem or reboot, and this for hosting servers with 300+ websites running on it. If we do have problems, they can be overcome most of the time. If not, it is mostly due to a hardware failure.
My skills in this area include FreeBSD management, Server scripting, Building control panels for server tasks, Wide variety of software (Postfix, Amavisd, Spamassassin, Apache, MySQL, PostgreSQL, Horde, SNMP, Various security tools like Tripwire, …)
